The Supreme Court's university engagement programme

23 August 2024

The Supreme Court sat in the Auckland High Court this week as part of its programme of conducting hearings away from its Wellington home base. Students from the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology and, for the first time, the University of Waikato were invited to attend the hearing.

The Court's university engagement programme focused on the criminal law appeal H v The King. As part of the programme, the Supreme Court judges hosted a Q&A panel discussion and answered students' questions about the work of the Court, and about advocacy and the law in general.

The Supreme Court began its programme of engagement sittings in 2022 to provide greater access to its proceedings. This was the sixth time that New Zealand’s highest court has conducted an outreach programme, providing interested members of the public, the profession and law students the opportunity to see the court in action.
