Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal deals predominantly with civil and criminal appeals from matters heard in the High Court and serious criminal matters heard in the District Court.

Criminal jurisdiction

After a long period of increased filings, the number of criminal appeals filed in the Court of Appeal has recently been decreasing.  In the 12 months ending 31 December 2013 there was a 9% decrease in the number of new appeals, from 556 cases to 508 in the 12 months ending December 2012.

For the 12 months ending 31 December 2013 this jurisdiction has also seen a:

  • 2% increase in disposals – 521 cases from 513 cases
  • 4% decrease in the number of active criminal appeals – 304 cases from 318 cases

Civil jurisdiction

The number of new civil appeals in the Court of Appeal has been increasing since early 2008.  In the 12 months ending 31 December 2013 there was a 12% increase in new civil appeals filed, from 263 cases to 295 in the 12 months ending December 2012.

For the 12 months ending 31 December 2013 this jurisdiction has seen a:

  • 19% increase in disposals – 297, from 249
  • 4% decrease in the number of active civil appeals – 237 cases, from 248 cases
