The Court of Appeal deals predominantly with civil and criminal appeals from matters heard in the High Court and serious criminal matters heard in the District Court.

Criminal jurisdiction

In the 2015 year there was no substantial change in the number of new criminal appeals filed, with 4 fewer cases in 2015 - down from 429 in 2014 to 425.
For the 2015 year the criminal jurisdiction in the Court of Appeal has also seen a:

  • 7% decrease in disposals - from 446 appeals to 414 appeals.
  • 4% increase in the number of active criminal appeals - from 287 active criminal appeals to 298.

Civil jurisdiction

In the 2015 year there was a small 4% decline in the number of new civil appeals filed, from 257 civil appeals in 2014 to 248 in the 2015 financial year.
For the 2015 year the civil jurisdiction has seen a:

  • 17% decrease in disposals - from 320 appeals to 267 appeals.
  • 6% decrease in the number of active civil appeals - from 186 active appeals down to 174.
