Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal deals predominantly with civil and criminal appeals from matters heard in the High Court and serious criminal matters heard in the District Court.

Criminal jurisdiction

In the 2014/15 financial year there was a 1% increase in the number of new appeals, from 449 cases in 2013/14 to 453. 

For the 2014/15 financial year the criminal jurisdiction has also seen a:

  • 25% decrease in disposals – from 541 appeals to 407 appeals.
  • 14% increase in the number of active criminal appeals – from 297 active criminal appeals to 319.

Civil jurisdiction

In the 2014/15 financial year there was an 18% decline in the number of new civil appeals filed, from 296 civil appeals in 2013/14 to 242 in the 2014/15 financial year.

For the 2014/15 financial year the civil jurisdiction has seen a:

  • 13% decrease in disposals – from 327 appeals to 285 appeals.
  • 17% decrease in the number of active civil appeals – from 229 active appeals down to 191.
