The Supreme Court is New Zealand’s final court of appeal. It deals with criminal and civil appeals from the lower courts. The Supreme Court must grant leave before an appeal can begin.
In 2016, there were 157 applications for leave to appeal. Of these, 38 were granted and 117 dismissed during 2016/17.
In 2016, there were 21 substantive judgments given dealing with 23 appeals. Of these, 11 were allowed and 12 were dismissed.
