Total new business

The Court’s workload decreased over the year 2019, with a total of 586 appeals and 296 applications filed.  

Appeals

A total of 639 appeals were disposed of, an increase of 20 compared to the previous year.

As at 31 December 2019, there were 420 appeals on hand, a decrease of 53 compared to the same time last year. 

Applications

The 296 applications disposed of is a decrease of 13 compared to the previous year. 

As at 31 December 2019, there were 104 applications on hand, four fewer than at the same time last year.

Examples of the types of applications dealt with by the Court include: leave to appeal, bail, name suppression, fresh evidence (civil) and disclosure (criminal) and jurisdictional issues.

 

Criminal jurisdiction

Criminal appeals

The number of new criminal appeals filed in the year 2019 decreased slightly with a total of 375 new appeals. 

A total of 415 criminal appeals were disposed of; 11 more than in the previous year.

As at 31 December 2019, there were 268 criminal appeals on hand, a decrease of 40 compared to the same time last year. 

Criminal applications

The number of new criminal applications filed in the year 2019 increased by 22 to 132 applications.

The number of criminal applications disposed of increased by 26 to 134.

As at 31 December 2019, the number of criminal applications on hand increased slightly to 47 applications.

  

Civil jurisdiction

Civil appeals

The number of new civil appeals filed in the year 2019 decreased by 29 to 211 new appeals. 

The number of civil appeals disposed of increased by 9 to 224.

As at 31 December 2019, there were 152 civil appeals on hand, a decrease of 13 compared to the same time last year. 

Civil applications

The number of new civil applications filed in the year 2019 decreased by 35 to 160 applications. 

The number of civil applications disposed of decreased by 10 to 166.
